A “Drop Zone” is known as the place where everyone in the family drops off their bags, keys, coats and more when they walk in the door. Just like anything else, if there is not a designated area for these items, they’ll end up as clutter. Creating a functional, organizational area to keep the things you carry walking in and out of the door is essential for maintaining a clutter-free home.

Think about how many people are in your family and make sure you include enough space for their belongings- you don’t want your space to be overflowing. “Lockers” are the most popular idea for a family drop zone, featuring hooks and cubbies for coats, bags and shoes. Depending on the size of your family, you may find it best if each family member has their own individual locker. For smaller families, a coat closet can also be utilized for this purpose, with a few added shoe racks and shelves.

Unconventional items need a space in the drop zone too! Think about your family’s specific needs and the items you use that may need their own storage area. Children usually carry things like book bags and sports equipment that end up on the floor where they don’t belong. For unsightly items like this, a bench with hidden storage has plenty of space while still keeping things hidden. By creating a place for the kids to drop their things off right near the entry, they will be much more likely to follow the system.

Extras like charging stations and mail areas are great add-ons ideas for your custom station. Adding a few built in charging cords can be a helpful addition to your drop zone, or even a mail area so that packages and letters aren’t accumulating on your kitchen counters or dining table.

Ultimately, remember to consider your lifestyle and design your custom system in a way that makes the most space for your family and lifestyle. There is no one size fits all when it comes to something as personal as a home, but that’s the beauty of a custom home!
